The Transition Companion - the latest thinking on Transition culture from Rob Hopkins

Submitted by peter on Mon, 30/01/2012 - 19:00

The Transition phenomenon of community initiated efforts to build greater local resilience is spreading virally and globally, and its narrative is becoming enriched by the stories of a growing number of local initiatives. Rob Hopkins presents new insights into the Transition story in this new book. It is available from a number of Australian book-sellers and online.

Here's a handy little applet created by the publishers of the book, which will give you a feel of its contents.(Click on the image below to fire up the applet)

It's a must-read for serious Transitioners and those wanting a better understanding of the whole Transition movement.

Coal Seam Gas - a predictable response to peak oil by the global energy companies - Dig it up, suck it up, frack it up, make the bucks now and forget tomorrow?

Suddenly "Gasland" is becoming a reality for us here in Australia. Do our government leaders have the balls to say no to big energy?

Ther are lots of events around Sydney and beyond to inspire and inform so, if you are needing a shot of inspiration, get in amongst it.

The Great Disruption?

Submitted by Dave-Martin on Fri, 08/04/2011 - 01:01

Are we facing a Great Disruption? A forced change to our whole way of life brought about by climate change, peak oil and global food shortages? Paul Gilding, plugging his new book (appropriately titled - The Great Disruption") on the Climate Spectator certainly thinks so -

Why didn’t more of us see it coming? After all, the signals have been clear enough – signals that the ecological system that supports human society is hitting its limits, groaning under the strain of an economy simply too big for the planet. But we didn’t and, as a result, the time to act preventatively has past.

Now we must brace for impact. Now comes The Great Disruption.

It is true that the coming years won’t be pleasant, as our society and economy hits the wall and then realigns around what was always an obvious reality: You cannot have infinite growth on a finite planet. Not ‘should not’, or ‘better not’, but cannot

Sound like that book may well be worth a read. Full article here - http://www.climatespectator.com.au/commentary/great-disruption
