Activities in the Sydney Basin Bioregion

Transition Sydney

Transition Sydney is a group of people from a range of local communities in the CBD, North, Inner West and West of the region. What we all share is a commitment to a peaceful and constructive transition from oil-dependency to a post-oil world – and a belief in sharing resources and supporting local communities right across Sydney and beyond.

Our main focus at the moment is:

  • Practical ways to support the development of local transition groups, with resources and our time
  • Providing training to Sydney-wide groups in Transition principles and practice. Five of us are accredited Training for Transition (T4T) trainers. This training is available to any group of people seriously considering setting up a Transition initiative. We are also supporting the Australian national T4T pool
  • Developing materials for Skilling up for Powerdown – giving people practical understanding of food production, water, energy, local economies and other key elements of planning for a sustainable world. We are developing the innovative WA LivingSmart course for Sydney, as well as a range of introductory presentations and courses, and a resource bank/ training in facilitation and organising skills. We are lucky to have full time and very skilled sustainability educators and communicators within the group.
  • Supporting Transition Australia through the training pool (above) and the national website.
  • Speakers - organising discussions with local and international speakers.
  • Developing contacts in the media to co-ordinate and encourage coverage of Transition issues.

We have general meeting each month and additional working-party meetings on training, communications and other specific issues. All our public meetings are advertised in the Events section on the home page

Training for Transition

Training for Transition (T4T), a two day course for any local existing group or group seriously considering setting up a Transition initiative, is available through 5 Sydney based trainers and other trainers in New South Wales.

This course was developed by two of the founders of Transition Totnes and the Transition Network, Sophy Banks and Naresh Giangrande, who came to Australia in January and February 2009 to train up the first batch of accredited trainers here (the course itself is accredited by the UN Decade of Sustainability). The two days covers: presenting peak oil, climate change and carrying capacity/fair share, envisioning the future we want to create, dealing with your own and others’ internal transitions, the transition process and timeline, tools of community engagement.

Permaculture Groups

The Sydney region is fortunate in having a number of very active Permcaulture organisations and teachers. Permaculture groups have been carrying  the sustainability ethic for the last 30 years all over the world and through education, practical demonstrations and peer support have inspired and assisted individuals and communities to take positive action. They are central to transition initiatives and will play a major role in the skilling up of communities around our regio as they seek to build or rebuild their local resilience.

All these groups meet regularly and have a range of other activities and events . Get incvolved! Here are the contact emails or websites for the Permaculture groups in our bioregion:

 Climate Action Groups

There are many climate action groups active in our bioregion. They range in their activities from straight climate advocacy to collective positive actions to reduce eco footprints, education, networking and so on. Transition initiatives have already been, and are likely to continue to be incubated  in these Climate Action groups and we recognise them as strong partners in the process of transition.
