Welcome to Transition Bondi
We are passionate about environmental sustainability, and we also like to have fun and eat well.
Lance & Elvis, the Hound Dog, together with Kit, Kerrie & Beatrice and some friends, started Transition Bondi in 2009 with the aim of building community in the Bondi area and beyond, through environmentally sustainable activities, including community gardening, growing, cooking and then eating what we produce, and running educational evenings.
In the meantime, we have been joined by media producer Pete who has been filming many of our garden adventures and speakers (see www.youtube.com/transitionbondi) and Damien, our local acupuncturist and Chinese medicine expert.
Transition Bondi is auspiced by Transition Sydney - www.transitionsydney.org.au.
Projects of Transition Bondi
Here in Bondi, we have several awesome projects:
1. A community Permaculture garden at the front and back of 241 Bondi Road, Bondi Beach (near Boonara Avenue). We meet every Saturday 10am-12pm to “build our community through gardening”, re-introducing the culture of producing our own food sustainably and ethically, which ensures our local food security. The fun stuff we do includes making compost, worm-farming, raising seedlings and planting fruit trees and vegetables. We are turning the green waste from local shops and cafes into precious compost and are expanding our plans for food production in the streets (“Eat of the Streets” program). Some of us also meet every third Sunday of the month at the Waverley Park Communal Garden on St Mary’s Avenue.
2. A yummy local organic dinner, prepared and shared together, with a guest speaker, workshop or life-changing film. This happens every Wednesday at Ruby’s Cafe at the Chapel by the Sea, 95 Roscoe Street, Bondi Beach. Meal preparation starts at 6pm, and the meal and activity go from 7 till 9pm. Films we screened in the past include “Dirt the Movie”, “Gasland”, “Vanishing of the Bees” and “The Future of Food”.
3. Organic food distribution: Food Connect offers affordable ethical produce. Fruit and vegie boxes can be pre-ordered at http://sydney.foodconnect.com.au and collected at our Wednesday night events (see 2. above).
4. An organising meeting every Friday 11-1pm for those committed to the continuing development and well-being of the people in the group.
5. Projects have included installing an Aquaponics system (partly funded by Waverley Council) and a chicken coop. Upcoming and ongoing projects include the installation of a native bee hive, the set-up of a soldier fly larvae system on top of our chicken coop and the "Eat of the Streets Project". We will introduce these projects as workshops in our re-skilling program which forms part of our big, long term project - the "BURP" or "Bondi Urban Resilience Project".
Background of Transition Towns
The Transition Towns idea was born in Totnes, England, in the late 90’s, out of a Permaculture design course taught by Rob Hopkins.
Transition Towns is a global movement building resilient, sustainable, vibrant and happy communities. It is a community based response to the future challenges of climate change and peak oil. For more information on Transition Towns, go to www.transitionnetwork.org.
